HOW DO I CARE FOR MY INFANT’S TEETH??

In old days people used to neglect their infant’s teeth. They used to think these teeth are temporary and permanent teeth will replace them. But now a days people are aware of importance of their infant’s oral health.

Significance of infant’s teeth
Healthy teeth are required for baby’s overall health. They help in proper chewing and form sounds and words. They also affect the way your baby’s jaw grows. Good oral hygiene also helps set good dental habits as your baby grows. Poor oral care can lead to infection, disease, or other teeth problems. Generally, baby teeth start to appear in between 5 to 6 months, but each baby’s growth is different. The first teeth to come in are usually the 2 bottom front teeth.

The process of erupting teeth is called teething. When your baby starts teething, you may notice that they drool more or want to chew on things. For some babies, teething may be painless. For others, they may have soreness and be cranky. Other symptoms of teething are loss of appetite and trouble sleeping.

Things to Do and Not to DO
Carefully watch your baby when you give them a bottle. Do not leave a bottle in the crib. Do not let your baby fall asleep with a bottle. The milk itself has sugar in it so it will stick to your baby’s mouth and cause tooth decay.

Also do not give your baby a cup of juice or milk during his sleeping time. Your baby can start using a sippy cup when they are about 6 months old. Stop giving your baby a bottle when they are 1 year old.

Once your child is 1 year old, give them water or plain milk between meals instead of other drinks. Only give them juice or flavored milk with meals. Juice and flavored milk have a lot of sugar in them.

Stop using a pacifier when your baby is two years old. Carefully watch your baby if he is doing thumb sucking. Prolonged use of a pacifier or thumb sucking can cause problems with teeth alignment. Talk to your dentist about which type of pacifier you should use. Always use a clean pacifier. Do not dip it in honey or another substance that has sugar.

Dentist Appointment:
Your baby should see a dentist for the first time around their first birthday. This is important if they are at high risk for cavities or other teeth problems. You can choose a dentist that specializes with kids ( Pedodontist).

How to care for your infant’s teeth
Start cleaning and caring for your baby’s gums well before the first tooth appears. A couple of times a day, just wipe their gums gently using a clean cotton or gauze.

As soon as teeth arrive, you can clean them twice a day (in the morning and before bed). Wrap a clean gauze around your finger and wipe the front and back of each of your baby’s teeth.

Once your baby is 2 years old, you can start using soft bristle brush as per guidance of your dentist. Always avoid fluoride containing tooth paste for few years. Because too much quantity of fluoride can cause weakening of bones.Ask your pedodontist, there are special type of tooth paste are available for kid’s teeth.

Also once your child is 18 months old, you can use a pea-sized amount of low-fluoride toothpaste on the toothbrush.

After cleaning your baby’s teeth and gums, rinse the toothbrush with tap water.

Store the toothbrush upright in an open container to allow it to air-dry.

If other family members’ toothbrushes are stored in the same place, make sure the brushes don’t touch. This reduces the risk that decay-causing germs will travel between brushes and into your baby’s mouth. You should replace toothbrushes every 3-4 months, or when the bristles get worn or frayed.

Teeth cleaning alone isn’t a guarantee against tooth decay. Diet and the way you feed your baby are also important. And to make sure your baby’s teeth and gums are healthy. We at Tooth Care Dental - Top dental clinic in Panchkula cleaning provides you the best pedodontist because we understand the importance of your infant’s oral health. Our Pedodontist guides you what is the best diet plan for healthy gums and also how to maintain good oral hygiene.
